# CCAO-F: the Claude exam for people who don't build things The associate exam is the only one of the four written for non-technical roles. It is also the only one that does not count toward your employer's partner status. **Time:** 8 minutes **What you'll have when you're done:** The exam facts, the seven domains and what each is worth, a preparation checklist, and a straight answer on whether this credential does anything for you or your company. ---Claude Certified Associate, Foundations (exam code CCAO-F) is the entry point of Anthropic's certification program, and the only one of the four exams written for people who do not write code. The official guide names operations, marketing, project management, education and communications as the target roles. Read the eligibility rule before anything else: **you can only register through the Anthropic Partner Academy, with a work email at a company in the Claude Partner Network.** Personal addresses are rejected. There is no public route in. No notes, no documentation, no AI assistant. The score report gives you a pass or fail, the scaled score, and your percentage in each section. Only the total decides the result, so one weak section cannot sink you on its own. ## Who it is actually for The guide describes someone who uses Claude as a work tool and builds Claude Projects as part of the job. Not a first-week user. Someone who has moved past asking questions and now reshapes how a piece of work gets done, and who already knows the practical limits: that it invents facts, that context runs out, that some data must never be uploaded. It explicitly rules out developers building on the API and people designing agent systems. Those are the other three exams. How closely that description fits you is the best study estimate you will get. If it fits, most of the preparation is learning Anthropic's vocabulary for things you already do. If it does not fit, the gap is real experience, and no practice bank closes that. ## What is on it, and what each part is worth The seven domains are not equal. Combine that with governance at 15% and over a third of the exam is judgment about risk rather than technique. **Prompting is only 14%.** That is far less than the exam's reputation, and far less than the internet's obsession with prompt tricks would suggest. The published sample questions from the risk domains share a shape worth internalizing: the fastest-looking option is the wrong one, and the correct answer is the one that verifies first. That is the same instinct the rest of this site is built on. The remaining half is product knowledge. Choosing between Projects, research mode and artifacts. Knowing how Haiku, Sonnet and Opus differ on cost, speed and quality. Working inside the context limit and knowing when to restart, summarize or save. Setting up a Project with instructions and files. Managing connectors like Google Drive and Gmail. Fixing a prompt that keeps returning weak results. ## Does it do anything for your employer? **No, and this is the one place CCAO-F differs from the other three.** Anthropic's certification FAQ lists three exams that count toward Claude Partner Network eligibility: Developer Foundations, Architect Foundations and Architect Professional. The Associate credential is listed as not counting. That does not make it worthless. It is the only exam in the program aimed at non-technical roles, and a credential is a credential. But if the reason you are considering it is to lift your company's standing in the Partner Network, this is the wrong one of the four to sit. ## Preparation checklist **Before you study anything** - Get a Partner Academy account. It needs a work email at a partner company. Confirm this works before you plan a single study session. - Read the official exam guide end to end. It is short, and it is the only document that actually decides what is on the test. - Open the official prep course, eight lessons. - If Claude is new to you, do Claude 101 first. **Study, weighted by what it is worth** Work down the domain table above, not alphabetically. Thirteen questions on output evaluation deserves more of your weekend than six on troubleshooting. **Hands-on, which is the part people skip** - Build one Claude Project with custom instructions and at least one knowledge file. - Use artifacts on a real task, and form an opinion about when they beat a plain reply. - Run the same task on Haiku, Sonnet and Opus. Compare cost, speed and quality yourself rather than reading someone's table about it. - Deliberately run a conversation to the context limit and practice the three ways out: restart, summarize, save. **Practice questions** There is no official practice exam any more. The one that ran on the old platform was retired when the program moved to Pearson VUE, so anything sold to you today as an "official practice test" is a copy of a dead product. The sample questions in the exam guide are the only official signal about question style. Third-party banks exist and some are free. Treat them as a way to find your weak domains, not as a preview of the exam. ## Registration and money Register and pay on the Partner Academy first, then use the emailed link to book with Pearson VUE. A registration stays valid for five years, so paying now and sitting later is allowed. Price depends on your company's partner tier. Registered-tier partners pay full price. Select, Preferred and Global Premier tiers get 50% off automatically at checkout, and the discount applies to retakes too. Ask whoever owns the Anthropic relationship at your company which tier you are in before you assume a number. Cancel or reschedule free up to 24 hours before your slot. Inside that window, or if you do not show, the fee is gone. Canceling inside Pearson VUE frees the slot but does not refund you; refunds go through Anthropic's certification support address. ## When it breaks **"My registration was rejected."** Almost always the email domain. It has to be a work address on a domain recognized on your company's partner record. A subsidiary or regional domain that has not been added will fail, and a certification earned on an unrecognized domain does not get credited to the company either. Domain changes go through partner support and take about 7 to 10 days, so sort it before you book. **"My work laptop blocked the exam software."** Common with managed devices. Book a test center instead of fighting your IT department. Run Pearson's system test on the actual machine you plan to use, well before exam day. **"The name on my ID does not match my registration."** Fix it before booking, through certification support. On the day it is a hard stop, not a discussion. **"I passed but no badge arrived."** Credly sends the claim invitation by email, usually within minutes for online exams. Add a personal email to your Credly profile so the badge survives changing jobs. **"It expired."** The credential lasts 12 months. Renew on time and it is a short, free, unproctored assessment on the Partner Academy. Let it lapse and you sit the whole exam again at full price.
