# I got a letter or document I don't understand
A plain-language explanation of what a confusing letter actually says, the parts that matter, and what to verify before you act on it.
**Time:** 8 minutes

**What you'll have when you're done:** A plain-language explanation, the parts that matter, and a short list of questions to verify.
---A letter arrives, from a landlord, a school, an insurer, a government office, and it's written in a way that makes a simple thing sound complicated. You don't need to become fluent in legal or bureaucratic language. You need to know what it says, whether you have to do anything, and by when.

---

## Do this

1. **Remove anything that identifies you first.** Account numbers, full names, addresses, case numbers. You can always add them back yourself once you know what a clause means.
2. **Type or paste the document**, or the confusing part of it, into any AI chat tool.
3. **Ask what it actually says**, using the prompt below.
4. **Read the plain-language version against the original**, sentence by sentence, for anything that's been softened or dropped.
5. **Write down the two or three questions** it raises that you can't answer from the document alone.

```
Here's a letter/document I need to understand:
[paste it, with names, account numbers, and addresses removed]
Explain, in plain language:
1. What is this actually saying, in a few sentences?
2. Is there anything I'm required to do? By when?
3. What happens if I do nothing?
4. What parts are unusual or worth double-checking with someone,
   rather than taking at face value?
Don't soften anything. If it's bad news, say so plainly.
```

## Check this before you trust it

- **Every date mentioned.** A deadline read wrong is the single most expensive mistake this task can produce.
- **Any dollar amount.** Confirm it matches what's actually printed, not a rounded or paraphrased version.
- **Whether it's actually legal, medical, or financial advice you need**, not just an explanation. This gets you oriented. It doesn't replace a lawyer, doctor, or accountant when the stakes are real.

---

## If it goes wrong

**The explanation contradicts what a person told you.** Trust the person, and go back to the specific sentence in the document that seems to disagree. Ask the AI tool to quote the exact line it's basing its answer on.

**You're still not sure what to do.** That's a legitimate outcome. Some documents are genuinely ambiguous, and "call and ask them directly" is often the actual next step, not a failure of this method.

**It's a medical, legal, or tax document with real consequences.** Use this to understand the document well enough to ask a professional a sharper question, not as a substitute for one.

**You accidentally pasted something identifying before removing it.** Close the conversation and, if you're using an account, delete it from your chat history. Don't reuse that same thread.
